Ann Vanderhoof's An Embarrassment of Mangoes is the story of her sailing trip from her home town of Toronto down to Trinidad and back. Along the way, she and her husband, novice sailors, meet a number of people who share with them recipes from their island's distinct cuisine. Thoroughly engaging.
Jeffrey Steingarten may be best known to most as a regular judge on Iron Chef America. His book, The Man Who Ate Everything was his first collection of food essays which first appeared in the pages of Vogue. It's his often hilarious personal journey to overcome all of his food aversions.
I know there are people out there who don't like Nigella Lawson. I'm not one of those people. What I love about Nigella Express: Good Food Fast is her conversational mode of writing the recipes. And they're simple. Almost all of the recipes have less than 6 ingredients and are no more than a page. Plus the photos are lovely.
